Jumeirah Carlton Tower take Afternoon Tea title

Jumeirah Carlton Tower take Afternoon Tea title

For the first time ever, 16 of the UK’s top Afternoon Teas were displayed at a Live Final at Westminster Boating Base on Wednesday 20th June.

Taking the crown of Afternoon Tea of The Year 2018, was Knightsbridge’s Jumeirah Carlton Tower.

The team, led by executive chef Simon Young, took their Symphony Afternoon Tea out of the hotel’s Chinoiserie restaurant, for one time only, and put it on display to nine judges and live audience.

Completed by head pastry chef Lyece Major and Chinoiserie tea sommelier Tenna Friis, the Jumeirah Carlton Tower team withstood the pressure and took home the inaugural title and a £1,000 prize.

Young said: “It feels amazing. The competition was very tough, so we are really happy. It should be dedicated to Lyece and Tenna.
“I hope the award will continue to improve our afternoon tea sales and recognition for Jumeirah Carlton Tower.“

Lyece added: “It is such an honour. We put a lot of work into our afternoon tea and we are so happy it has won.”

Winner of the Best Tasting Afternoon Tea of the Year category was The Lawns Restaurant at Thornton Hall, The Wirral, Liverpool.

Its Great Wirral Afternoon Tea took home the title based on flavour profile.

Meanwhile, The Perception at W London Leicester Square hotel took home Best Presented Afternoon Tea of the Year Award for its Tea-Total Afternoon Tea offer that included crystallised cocktails.

Editor of Hotel F&B magazine Joe Bill said: “From dry ice to Disney themes, beer pairing to musical accompaniment and the traditional to the ultra-modern, the innovation we have seen from the finalists has really blown the judges away.
“The standard of food and tea pairings was exceptional. Some of these hotels have spent years refining their afternoon tea service and they really brought their ‘A’ game the first ever awards.

“There was a lot of pressure to perform in front of a crowd, in a time limit and judges were really impressed with the professionalism of the teams.
“Congratulations t all the winners and especially to the Jumeirah Carlton Tower team, who really impressed from the outset.
“We look forward to doing it all again next year.
